What Homeowners Should Know About Central Air Conditioning
Understanding how central air conditioning works, why refrigerant levels matter, and how to maintain proper airflow in Metro Detroit summers.

Central air conditioning does not just blow cold air into your home; it actually removes heat and moisture from indoor air and rejects it outside through the condensing unit.
The Role of Airflow Airflow is the lifeblood of an air conditioning system. If indoor air cannot move freely across the indoor evaporator coil, the refrigerant cannot absorb heat efficiently. This causes the coil temperature to drop below freezing, leading to ice buildup that blocks all airflow. Always keep supply registers open and unblocked by furniture or rugs.
Outdoor Condenser Clearance The outdoor condenser unit expels heat into the surrounding air. Leaves, tall weeds, and shrubbery within two feet of the unit restrict air intake, making the compressor work under higher head pressure and reducing efficiency. Gently hose down the exterior aluminum fins in spring to remove pollen and dust buildup.
Condensate Drain Lines As the evaporator coil pulls moisture out of humid Michigan summer air, the water drains into a drip pan and flows through a PVC drain line. Over time, algae and sediment can clog this line, causing water to back up and overflow into your furnace cabinet or utility room floor.
Knowing When to Call an Experienced Technician If your AC is constantly running without cooling, hissing near line sets, or tripping circuit breakers, professional diagnostic tools are needed to test capacitor capacitance, contactor points, and refrigerant pressures accurately.
