Water Heater Warning Signs Homeowners Should Watch For
Key indicators that your gas or electric water heater is approaching failure or in need of expert evaluation.

Water heaters work quietly behind the scenes until you step into a cold shower or find water pooling across the utility floor. Recognizing early warning signs helps you address issues before major water leaks occur.
1. Popping or Rumbling Sounds As water heaters age, minerals like calcium and lime settle to the bottom of the tank. In gas water heaters, the burner heats this sediment layer, causing trapped water beneath it to boil violently and create popping or knocking noises.
2. Rusty or Discolored Hot Water If tap water runs clear on cold but rusty or brownish when turned to hot, the inside of your tank or its sacrificial anode rod may be corroding. The anode rod protects the steel tank lining from corrosion; once depleted, the tank walls begin to rust.
3. Moisture or Dripping Around the Tank Base Any standing water or active dripping around the base of the tank warrants immediate inspection. While sometimes it is a faulty drain valve or temperature-and-pressure (T&P) relief valve, internal tank fractures cannot be patched and require equipment replacement.
4. Inconsistent Water Temperature If hot water runs out faster than normal or fluctuates between lukewarm and scalding, the thermostat, dip tube, or heating elements require professional testing.
